Recruiting Notebook: Bears gain CU transfer, former Denver East star Kountz

UNC has landed a Front Range product who had put his name in the transfer portal just a month ago. Daylen Kountz committed to the Bears over the weekend and will come to Greeley with two years of eligibility remaining.

Kountz started the first five games of the 19-20 season at Colorado after finishing strong as a freshman. The Denver East alum played in all 36 games as a freshman and all 32 this past season for the Buffaloes. He finished his two year stint in Boulder averaging four points, a rebound and an assist per game while starting a total of seven games.

He averaged 23.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.5 steals as a senior, finishing as the leading scorer in Class 5A while being named USA Today’s Colorado State Player of the Year, All-Colorado by the Denver Post and the Denver Public Schools player of the year.

Kountz finished his prep career with averages of 24.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.2 steals in his prep career.

The 6’4″, 191-lb. guard would have to sit out the coming season at UNC if the NCAA doesn’t change the transfer rules. A change to those rules is being discussed currently among the organization’s leadership.
