Pardon me if I’m a little…shocked? Surprised? Floored? Intrigued?
Actually, pardon me for being all of those after the announcement this afternoon that former Broncos WR Ed McCaffrey is the new football coach at UNC.
(Note to a certain Denver media outlet: That’s the University of Northern Colorado, not that east coast school you tweeted out. C’mon. That’s the type of mistake that…I’ll leave it at that.)
When night fell last night, the clues we were tracking looked to be leading towards a former UNC assistant and Greeley native getting the job. As Thursday dawned, things had shifted and it began to appear that defensive coordinator Marty English might be the man. It wasn’t until the hour before the team meeting was to take place that McCaffrey’s name reached the radar. Literally, in the moments after I tweeted out the note confirming that a team meeting was set for 3:00, that name appeared on Twitter, both in DM’s and general tweets.
As for assessing the hire, I’m going to refrain from a nuts-and-bolts look for now. There are a lot of unanswered questions, questions we’ll hopefully get answers to Friday afternoon. However, the timing completely sucked the wind out of what was going on in Ft. Collins. I can’t say that it was a purposeful announcement point, but to make that announcement at the same time the Rams’ new coach was meeting the public offered quite the dichotomy to watch. It’s the old “winning the sports section” adage that has defined the Yankees/Mets in NYC for decades (or, at least places where they still have…oh, wait…)
