Tucker to leave Buffs for Michigan State

Colorado head football coach Mel Tucker kept telling Buffaloes’ fans he was flattered that Michigan State was interested in him, but excited to be in Boulder.

Michigan State offered something more exciting – and more lucrative.

Bruce Feldman of The Athletic reported late Tuesday night that Tucker, hired as CU’s head coach just 14 months ago, has agreed in principle to become the head coach at Michigan State.

CU confirmed Tucker’s departure, effective immediately, on Wednesday morning with a statement from athletic director Rick George:

“We are disappointed to see coach Tucker leave,” George said. “We are excited about the upward trajectory of our football program and we’ll get to work immediately hiring the next head coach to build on our momentum and lead our young men. We’re confident this program is on the verge of competing at the highest level and has the resources and support in place to do so for a long time.”

CU’s statement added that a search for a “permanent replacement” is already underway.
